Let’s be honest here; when it comes to camping, there is a really good chance you are going to get very dirty. I mean you are sleeping, eating, and living outside, so clearly it’s bound to happen. That said, the idea of being able to take a shower and clean up, probably sounds like a wonderful concept. The deal is, however, not every camping experience offers the amenity of running water let alone showers. That’s why having a portable shower during your trip is a true blessing.
Now, you can certainly buy a shower or you can decide to make your own homemade version. In this article we will address the latter. Making your own shower can be fun and save you some money along the way.
Here Is What You Will Need…
As far as materials are concerned, you will need to get the following:
1. Nine pieces of 1′ long ¾” diameter PVC pipe.
2. Five pieces of 5′ long ¾” diameter PVC pipe.
3. 8 Three way ¾” connectors.
4. A drill.
5. Garden Hose.
6. Bucket.
7. A 4′ X 6′ plastic tarp.
8. Two dozen plastic zip ties.
9. 10′ of medical tubing and heavy-duty rubber bands.
10. A one-gallon capacity spray bottle.
How to Make Your Camping Shower?
Once you have gathered your materials from the list provided above, the next step is to create two separate squares by connecting two sets of four 1′ PVC using four of the three-way connectors for each set. Next you will use the longer 5′ long PVC pieces to attach the two previously made squares together. One set will attach to each end of the 5′ long pipe. This will act as the shell for the portable shower stall. Now take the plastic tarp and wrap it around all four sides of the frame, using the plastic zip ties to securely fasten the tarp to the frame, being sure to allow for an opening to enter and exit from.
Camping Shower- Cold-Water Version
At this point you can decide if you want a cold or warm shower option. For a cold-water option you will need to take the hose that is attached to the one-gallon bottle and cut it with a knife. The opposite end of the hose, which is attached to the spray nozzle will also need to be cut. The reason for cutting the hose at these two points is so it can be replaced with the medical tubing. Therefore, this rubber tube should be connected to both the nozzle and the bottle. Using the heavy duty rubber bands, you should be able to tightly fasten the connection points. You could also use duct tape to help further secure the connections in place of the rubber bands. Now fill the bottle with water and pump by using the spray nozzle. Be sure to check all areas for any possible leaks. Make any adjustments necessary if any leaks are detected. At this point, your cold-water shower is ready to use.
Camping Shower- Warm-Water Version
If you would prefer a warm-water option (and to be honest, most of us would) you are going to depend on some dry sunny days to assist in heating the water up naturally. Otherwise, you will require a pot of water on a stove or open fire to provide the heat source. Either way, once the water is heated up to your desired temperature, pour it in the one-gallon bottle. The remainder of the process is no different than what we stated above in the cold-water option.
In the end, the point here is to have the opportunity to get cleaned and refreshed by taking a good shower, despite not having all the comforts of home close by. By having the option of a portable shower, you can stay clean pretty much anywhere and anytime.
By following the steps provided above, you should have a good understanding on exactly what it takes to build your own portable camping shower. With a little planning and ensuring you have all the correct materials needed, you are well on your way to a successful project. So, no more excuses for why you might have that funny smell, even when you decide to camp outdoors.
