The first campground I will mention is one that is near and dear to my heart. The reason being that it is in the center of Cajun Country. It is a campground called Lake Fausse Point State Park and is located about twenty miles from St. Martinville, Louisiana. The address for the park is 5400 Levee Road, St. Martinville, LA. 70582. There are several ways to travel to the park, so it is recommended that you research the routes to determine, which would be the most accommodating to your planning.
Lake Fausse Point State Park consists of over six thousand acres in the Atchafalaya Basin, which was formerly the home site of the Chitimacha Indians. The region was dominated by French and Acadian farmers and trappers. The Spanish gained control of the land from 1763 until 1802 which created an area rich in cultural heritage and diversity.
The campground offers a diversity of facilities including cabins, and over fifty campsites, most with water and electrical hookups. Charges apply and may be found on the Lake Fausse Point website or on their Facebook Page.
Although, the reason I prefer camping here, is in the fishing, there are other activities offered, such as Boat Rental (variety) and a water playground from April 1 through October 31.
I should mention also that there are historic sites to visit nearby, such as the Longfellow Evangeline Oak Historical Site, in nearby St. Martinville. I would also be remiss if I didn’t mention the area food. Seafood is in abundance in the area, and a family outing, is not complete without trying the Boudin, Cracklins and if in the area at the right time, the World Famous Couchon Au Lait.
The next campground I would like to give some information on located in South Central Louisiana and called Chicot State Park near the town of Ville Platte, Louisiana with the address of 3469 Chicot Park Road, Ville Platte, LA 70586. Here again, I would recommend doing research on routes to determine, which would be most accommodating to the trip planning, as there are several available.
Chicot State Park has an area of six thousand acres of rolling hills and water. Record sized catches of a variety of fish have been caught in its pristine waters. Wildlife, birds and waterfowl are in abundance in this park. The scenery and wildlife are picture postcard perfect.
Some of the facilities provided are deluxe cabins, lodges and even a group camp. It also has available 198 campsites with water and electrical hookups. Also available are primitive camping area sites. They can be hiked into or canoed to and consist of only a bench and fire ring. The south campground is nearer the entrance and is my favorite spot when tent camping. Reservation of campsite and rates are available on the Chicot State Park website or Facebook page.
I love to go camping and fishing at this campground. I find that is has a laid-back attitude. It, also, is only an hour away from Marksville, LA (Paragon Casino) and only thirty minutes from the landmark Freds Bar in Mamou, LA two of my favorite places. If you know anything about Louisiana, you know what I mean!!
Until next time, Happy Trails and go out and create some family memories.
