Camping lets us escape into nature—but the more we visit wild places, the more we need to protect them. The Leave No Trace (LNT) principles are the gold standard for responsible outdoor recreation in 2026. Follow these seven rules and you help keep trails pristine for future generations.
- Plan Ahead & Prepare Know regulations, weather, and skill level. Pack the right gear, bring maps, and camp in established sites.
- Travel & Camp on Durable Surfaces Stick to trails and established campsites. Avoid trampling vegetation—use rock, gravel, or already-cleared spots.
- Dispose of Waste Properly Pack out everything (trash, food scraps, toilet paper). Use designated bathrooms or dig catholes 6–8 inches deep, 200 feet from water.
- Leave What You Find Don’t take rocks, plants, or artifacts. Leave natural objects and cultural sites as you found them.
- Minimize Campfire Impacts Use existing fire rings, keep fires small, burn only dead/down wood. Extinguish completely—cold to the touch.
- Respect Wildlife Observe from a distance, never feed animals, store food securely. Keep pets leashed and quiet.
- Be Considerate of Other Visitors Keep noise low, yield to others on trails, respect quiet hours. Leave the campsite cleaner than you found it.
Quick 2026 Reminder Use apps like Leave No Trace (LNT) and iNaturalist to log sightings and learn more. Pack out micro-trash (orange peels, wrappers) and choose eco-friendly gear (biodegradable soap, reusable items).
Camping responsibly means more beautiful places for everyone.
