A quality tent is essential for creating a home away from home, whether you’re planning to sleep in one night or stay a week. But not all tents are created equal, especially if you live in an area with frequent rain (looking at you, PNW). We’ve tested many camping tents over the years and found that premium options offer several features that elevate your experience. They include a more robust pole design and materials, more livable space with features like near-vertical walls and dividers, and full-coverage rainflies to block out blowing wind and heavy rainfall.
We’ve put many of these premium tents to the test, including NEMO’s Aurora Highrise 6P and Marmot’s Limestone 4P. Both offered great livability, with plenty of room for stretching out and sleeping plus spacious vestibules to keep you from bumping into your neighbors in the middle of the night. They also have good ventilation, with smart placement of mesh and vents. The high ceilings on these tents provide excellent stargazing, and the dividers are ideal for keeping kids out of your sleeping area.
We’ve also found that most premium camping tents are easier to set up, with pre-attached poles and color-coded hooks. We recommend involving the kids in the process to ensure everyone’s comfortable and confident with setting up the tent.
