A camping van is a vehicle you can use to camp, with a kitchen area and sometimes toilets or full bathrooms. Some camper vans are designed for specific types of activities, like biking or hiking. There are even some that double as RVs, with slideouts and awnings. These are called Class B RVs, and they have everything you need to live comfortably on the road.
Most campervans have a table that folds out, swivel seats and a kitchen cover to transform from vehicle to home on wheels. You’ll also need to flip up the bed when it’s time to hit the sack, and a few more tricks and folds may be necessary to turn the van into a dining or entertainment area for a day of exploring.
While you can find some luxury campervans, the majority are DIY conversions made from automotive vans or panel trucks. They’re often more affordable than RVs, but they’re not as spacious and don’t have toilets or showers. If you want to live comfortably in a campervan, consider getting insulated and adding solar panels.
The best thing about van life is that it’s completely up to you where and how you camp. Some full-time van dwellers stealth camp (camping incognito in public places) or boondock on BLM land or national parks. Others prefer traditional campgrounds. There’s even a large, family-friendly community for RVers who choose to live in their vans full-time: Fulltime Families, with branches ranging from boondockers to medical nomads. They post regularly on Facebook and host rallies across the United States and Canada.
