Camping on blackwater river is a great way to experience the wilds of Florida in peace. There are plenty of things to do in this area including fishing, kayaking, swimming and hiking. The gulf / ocean is also a short drive away for those who want to spend some time at the beach!
Nestled among towering longleaf pines, the 30 campsites of Blackwater River State Park offer an incredible array of activities centered around the park’s namesake waterway. Despite its dark tannic water (attributed to tannins from decomposing plant material) the river’s sugar-white sand bottom and banks are breathtakingly pristine, providing a playground for striped bass, catfish, river otters, and the occasional less-friendly gator.
Visitors may also enjoy hiking one of the two park trails that wind past ox bow lakes, through forests of sabal palm and white cedar, and along sandy banks that are ideal for picnicking or just relaxing. A wide variety of wildlife can be seen in the park, from white-tailed deer and bobcats to turkeys and wild hogs. Birdwatchers will appreciate the opportunity to observe Mississippi kites, a federally protected species, as well as warblers and red-cockaded woodpeckers.
During the spring and fall, the park is the perfect place to experience the wilds of north Florida’s remote Panhandle region. Summer can be hot and humid, while winter offers cool temperatures but may limit outdoor activities. Check the park’s website for current conditions before visiting.
